Good day, and welcome back to The Beard Struggle beard blog. Today let us start things off with a real bang as we discuss 5 Charming Facts We Have Learned About Beards...
FACIAL HAIR HAS A SUN PROTECTION FACTOR OF AROUND 21!
It is a little known fact that our furry face fuzz has a rather magnificent spell of the protection factor when it comes to keeping us safe from UV heatwaves.
It is believed that having a medium to a long-sized face full of whiskers has an average UV protection factor of around 21. Another neat thing about sporting a furry face is they not only protect you from otherwise harmful UV rays, but your beard can also help keep your face warm in the much colder, frosty winter months. Pretty darn snazzy to know, right?
BEARD BARBERS OF THE PAST WERE ALSO OFTEN SURGEONS!
From the subheading above, you might be scratching your head wondering if this is indeed true, or nothing more than internet trolling nonsense. But I can confirm it is very much factual. Pretty darn scary, but true nonetheless.
From the 16th century to around the 18th century in London. many barbers and surgeons were in the same business known as 'Barber-Surgeons'.
This is according to the Oxford University medical journal, suggesting barber-surgeons were in effect of GPs of their era.
They would treat illnesses such as syphilis and venereal disease and bloodletting, which was believed to be necessary for good health maintenance. They also sold many medicines, much like today's pharmacies do.
And if you so happened to sport a beard you could get a trim along the way for good measure. Almost like a 'one stop shop' for just about everything, really. It sure is a strange world we live in.
BEARDS ARE SAID TO INCREASE A MANS SOCIAL STATUS!
It is believed that a man who chooses to sport a beard is considered smarter, more charming and most attractive amongst his peers, boosting his social status.
There has been more studies and surveys which have continuously confirmed men who had facial hair are said to be more attractive to the opposite sex compared to those who do not, but it is said to heighten a man's charm ability and smartness, or at least the perception of this.
Beards are ever-growingly popular on social media and have proven to boost a man's popularity on such platforms as Instagram and Twitter if used correctly.
BEARDS GROW FASTER WHEN A MAN REFRAINS FROM SEX!
Sorry guys, but rumour has it that if you are trying to grow out your fuzzy man-mane, you might want to refrain from too much bedroom activities for a while.
The rumour mill suggests that beard growth is at it's best when a man refrains from sexual activity for a substantial period of time.
This pointer has been heavily debated as being false news, with other claims actually suggesting your facial hair will flourish much quicker if you actually HAVE MORE sex. Whilst there is no concrete evidence to back either debate, I think I know which outcome I'd prefer to listen to. How about you?
BEARDS ARE CONSIDERED SEXY, BUT SOME PEOPLE ARE SCARED OF THEM!
Although we might love checking out our whiskers and pride ourselves on our bearded appearance, would you believe that some people actually fear a man in a beard?
It is not all that common, thankfully, but some folks have real irrational phobias of beards, which is known as pogonophobia.
I've come to notice some of my friend's children get a little spooked by my big red beard when they first meet me, but they usually warm to it given a little time. But I am yet to meet anyone who claims to be suffering from pogonophobia. Funny little word, isn't it?
